TIRANA, August 8
The agricultural imports have reached the value of Lek56.5 billion, during the first months of 2019 or Lek1.7 billion more than the same period of last year. Official data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development show that the agriculture sector is the more affected one, because not only the exports are in decrease, but the imports have increased significantly. This means, that the Albanian citizens are eating mainly products imported from abroad, specifically the meat and milk products.
Farming is the sector of the economy that withdraws more imports, with an increase of 19.2% during the period January-June 2019, registering a total value of Lek5.3 billion. Whereas, the fishing has had a slight decrease, reaching the total value of Lek4 billion. Albania imports more agro-industrial products, that had a total value of Lek34 billion, in the first 6 months of 2019, which also increased by 3.3% (or around Lek1 billion), compared to the same period of last year.
But there is a reason for this. Experts say that the lack of security, vaccination, and investments in the veterinary infrastructure, have made the Albanian meat products undesirable in the European Union countries. Thus, Albania can only import meat products, but not export them yet.
