The cultivation of mussels increased significantly during 2014, mainly in the southern city of Saranda, causing an increase of the cultivation surface in littoral zones near to Butrint Lake. The amount of gathered mussels during the past year increased by 50% compared to the production of mussels in 2013, at an amount of 1500 tons.
In Butrint Lake in Saranda currently operate 50 private mussels’ producers which use a surface of 1600 hectares for the cultivation of this species and 78 producing plants. They have faced difficulties in ensuring markets for the export of mussels, given that they satisfy easily the Albanian consumers’ demands for mussels.
Meanwhile, figures about the performance of the fishing industry during the past year show that fisheries caught 7.6% more fish than in 2013, at a total amount of 5.813 tons of fish. The aquaculture industry faced difficulties during 2014 due to the strong competition of fish import from neighboring countries.
