The Albanian bank system counts about 2.9 million active bank accounts, based on statistics issued by Bank of Albania. The number of bank accounts its equal to the number of Albanian residents and banks report for a stable increase trend of bank accounts, a fact that shows the strengthen of financial culture and the creation of good relations between citizens and banks in Albania.
During the past year the number of bank accounts increased by 7% while for the two last years, they increased by 11%. Bank of Albania’s statistical report on bank accounts shows that 2.73 million of them are active bank accounts opened by individuals, and 160.000 business bank accounts.
In comparison to bank accounts opened by residents, those opened by nonresident subjects have decreased in past years. In 2011, 31.000 was the number of bank accounts opened by nonresidents, while in November 2014 their number decreased to 21.000.
Experts say that Albanian emigrants who live in other countries have reduced their bank activity in Albania or most of those who have had active bank accounts in country, have become permanent residents.
