MIE Pushes on with Kalivac HPP Project Despite Stakeholders Opposition

TIRANA, June 14

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy (MIE) concluded the negotiation process and signed the contract with the winner of Kalivaci Hydro Power Plant in Vjosa River, local media reported on Wednesday. The winner for this project was announced in late October 2017 while the negotiation of the contract terms was carried out during the following months.

The winning consortium consists of a joint venture of Ayen Enerji and Fusha and it is expected to invest Euro 125 million in the construction of the HPP project that will be completed in a period of 30 months. The completion of the procedure paves the way for the construction of the HPP project left pending for years.
On the other hand, HPP projects over Vjosa River has been strongly opposed by environmental organizations, foreign scientists, and the people living along the riverside. Vjosa is considered a unique river, one of the last rivers in Europe that flows in a natural state. It consists of high values for flood mitigation and for the maintenance of a specific biodiversity. Vjosa, also considered the Blue Heart of Europe runs free along its 270km and all its tributary rivers also run free, thus creating a unique water network in the entire continent.
