TIRANA, January 12
The first steps toward the construction of the southern airport will be taken in 2018. The government has foreseen an amount of $ four million in the medium-term budget for 2017-2019. According to the official document, a fund of Lek 420 million will be used for the detailed planning and construction of the airport.
At the beginning, the city of Gjirokastra was mentioned as the place where the airport would be built, but the cities of Saranda, Korca, Vlora, and Fier were added to the list.
Based on the transport strategy 2016-2020, these cities are considered potential candidates for the construction of the third international airport, following Rinas and Kuksi.
Albania accounts a total of 12 small aerodromes, mostly covered in vegetation, which can be used for civil aviation purposes.
The location of the southern airport has been raising questions for the government for a long time. The problem is related to the fact that the new concessionary agreement with Tirana Airport Concessionary, doesn’t allow the construction of another international airport within a 100km radius.
In summer 2016, Report TV unveiled two projects for the construction of the southern airport in Delvina or Gjirokastra. Both proposals were included in the plan for the development of the coastal area.
