Companies have started using railway lines as a smart alternative to transport their products, at the same time the number of travelers that use them has decreased. This is what a recent study of INSTAT has shown, regarding the use of railway lines in Albania.
The transport of merchandise for volume/km using railways system increased by 142 % in the second trimester of 2014, compared to the previous year. Also, the figures show that the international railway lines transport increased by 55.8% in 2014, compared to the previous year.
Number of passengers per kilometer that traveled by railway lines to the second quarter 2014 decreased from 3,143 to 2,399 passengers / km, compared to the second quarter of 2013, reduced by 23.7%. But compared to the first quarter of 2014, the number of travelers increased by 78.1%.
The passenger system presently consists of the following lines:
1. Shkodër–Vorë railway–Durrës–Rrogozhinë–Fier–Vlorë
2. Vorë–Tirana is no longer operational as of September 2013. This is due to the fact that Tirana station has been demolished to make way for a new road project. It is now necessary to catch the rail replacement bus service from outside what is left of Tirana station to Vorë to catch onward rail connections. This operates between the two towns as part of the Durrës–Tiranë railway.
3. Rrogozhinë–Elbasan–Librazhd
