TIRANA, February 6
Over a decade after the start of negotiations Albania and Italy finally signed a long-awaited social security agreement. The deal facilitates equal treatment and access to benefits for citizens of both countries. Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Igli Hasani and Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani signed the agreement. Over 500,000 Albanian residents in Italy, and Italian citizens, who live and work in Albania will be the beneficiaries of the social security deal.
It covers old age, invalidity insurance, survivorsโ benefits, unemployment, sick leave, and parental leave and complies with international standards on the coordination of social security terms.
The final step in this process is the approval of ratification by the respective parliaments.
Currently, Albania has social security agreements with 15 countries and is in the negotiation process with other 17.
