Mallorcan Hoteliers Eyeing Investments in Albania

Representatives of the Mallorcan accommodation industry are eyeing opportunities for hotel development in Albania. According to Majorcadailybulletin.com, hoteliers from the Balearic are looking for new expansion destinations, following a decline in profitability in the Caribbean region.
Therefore, they are considering Albania as a new destination due to the tax incentives for strategic investments in the accommodation and travel sector.

“Last month, there was a series of contacts between hotelier and government representatives. Led by Iberostar, other hotel groups included Viva and MAC. Jet2 were also invited to look into flights between Albania and the UK,” Majorcadailybulletin.com reported on Sunday.

British tourists followed by Germans have dominated the Balearic market for many years. Thus, direct routes between Tirana’s Airport and the UK are essential for the plans of the Majorcan hoteliers. Currently, three carriers are operating non-stop flights Tirana – London.

Melia was the first movers among Spanish hotel companies and will have two establishments when the Melia Tirana opens in 2021. The company announced earlier in February 2019 that besides Melia Tirana, it expects to open another hotel in Albania in 2020, the Melia Durres, an extraordinary five-star resort in Gjiri Lalzit Bay, north of Durres, the second most important city in the country. The company has already invested in the Adriatic coast, in Croatia and Montenegro.

Further on, Iberostar’s president Miguel Fluxa announced at the Berlin ITB fair in March that the group will be investing 300 million euros over the next five years in incorporating six hotels with 3,000 rooms.
