Rare Sight as 50 Loggerhead Sea Turtles Hatched in Divjaka – Karavasta National Park

TIRANA, August 14

A batch of 50 loggerhead sea turtles is hatching in Divjaka – Karvasta National Park and making their way to the Adriatic Sea. This is not the first case of sea turtles hatching in Albania, but it’s the first case of sea-turtles nest monitoring from the day when the mother turtle returned to the beach to lay its eggs until the moment when all the hatchlings will make their way to the sea. Director of Administration of Protected Areas in Fieri Region Ardian Koci said that this event enriches the biodiversity values in Divjaka – Karavasta National Park.
He highlighted that the loggerhead hatchlings, also known as Caretta-caretta turtles, are the expected reward after long days of monitoring and sleepless nights.

Koci also added that the nest monitoring will continue for over a week and all the people interested in volunteering can contact that Administration of Protected Areas in Fieri Region.
According to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), loggerhead sea turtles are the most common species in the Mediterranean Sea. Even though they are not hunted as much as other sea turtles they face numerous threats like accidental capture in fishing gear, habitat loss due to tourism, climate change, and marine pollution.
