TIRANA, July 26
The German Government will support the construction of the new 400kV interconnection line between Albania and Macedonia with a loan of Euro 50 million.
The agreement signed on Tuesday by the Albanian Minister of Industry and Energy, Damian Gjiknuri and the German Ambassador to Tirana Susanne Schutz will pave the way to the construction of the line that is a key investment for the region.
“Now, we have all the necessary financial support for the construction of this new power line. The German loan has a value of EUR50 million, while other Euro 14 million will be provided as grants by the European Union (EU),” Minister Gjiknuri declared after signing the agreement.
Besides the interconnection line, the project includes the construction of two power stations in Fier and Elbasan cities.
On her part, Ambassador Schutz said that this is a contribution to stable power supply and also a chance for power export. She added that although six years were needed for signing the agreement, the implementation stage is not going to be so long. Schutz highlighted that people shouldn’t be left waiting.
The power line with Macedonia is the least that Albania is building with the countries of the region and when it will be completed the country will be totally connected to the region by land.
