During the presentation of “Regular Economic Report for Southeast Europe” in Tirana, World Bank Director for South East Europe Elen Goldstein affirmed WB’s support to the Albanian government regarding reforms in the energy sector.
“We fully support the initiatives undertaken by the government in fighting corruption in the energy sector,” said Elen Goldstein, adding that “war against corruption must focus in avoiding the nonpayment of energy bills and informality.”
The World Bank report shows that the economic growth of the southeast Europe countries has been slight during 2014, at about 0.2%, while Albania had the most positive performance. According to the report “during the past months of 2014, the economy revived due to the increase of lending, the payment of outstanding debts by the government to businesses and business climate improvement”.
Speaking about the energy sector, Goldstein stated that the government must ensure a functioning and unified system, whose standards will assist in the finalization of reforms.
In addition, she declared that Albania has progressed more than Russia or Ukraine regarding economic developments and the influence euro zone may have in the economic indicators in country. “If euro zone would have had economic growth, this would have been affected in Albania, but, according to her, the forthcoming progress of Albania depends on the euro zone progress.”
