Hungarian Wizz Air airline company has expressed interest to establish their activity at the Kukesi Airport, since the Albanian government is finalizing the negotiations with the Tirana International Airport to remove its exclusivity on airline operations in Albania. Tirana International Airport is the only functioning airport in Albania and it took the exclusivity of airline operations in Albania for a period of 20 years in 2005 by the then government.
Representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and Wizz Air company visited the Kukesi Airport and inspected the technical and infrastructural conditions of the new airport. The representatives of Wizz Air expressed their interest to start operating in the new airport and to cooperate with the Albanian authorities.
Kukesi airport is a new airport in the northern city of Kukes built in 2006, which has never been put in use. After reducing the exclusivity of TIA, the government will invite airline companies to submit their proposals in order to start operating in Kukes Airport. The opening of this new airport will affect in the decrease of flightsβ prices in Albania and is expected to employee about 200 people. Wizz Air is the biggest airline company which operates currently in Macedonia.
