On Tuesday, representatives of private businesses and organizations in the tourism sector held a meeting with the Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, Arben Ahmetaj. Β The discussions between the tourism operators and the Minister were focused on the new taxation scheme for 2016 and on the annual strategy the Ministry has prepared for the sector. These issued were discussed after taking in consideration the new law on tourism, approved lately by the parliament.
The representatives of tourism companies proposed that the government should compile a new strategy and policies for the development of this sector. They also claimed about the high air-portal tax and urged the government to keep its promise for decreasing the VAT.
The head of the Hotelier Association, Zak Topuzi, declared that VAT in Albania in the tourism sector is higher than in other regional countries while representatives from the Albanian Tourism Association declared that the tourism sector is facing a heavy fiscal burden which is hampering its development and making it less competitive compared to neighbor countries.
