The Tumulus of Kamenica is becoming a touristic attraction and being visited by tourists in past years, one of the biggest ancient cemeteries in Balkan, situated only 15 kilometers away from Korca city.
The ancient tumulus has a central grave which dates back to the Bronze Age (13th century BC) and two other large unique concentric circles. It has more than 400 ancient graves which were discovered during an excavation expedition by an archeologist’s team of the Albanian Institute of Archaeology and the Albanian Rescue Archaeology Unit.
The archeologists found 440 skeletons and about 3500 archaeological objects during 2000-2002 excavation expedition. The excavation team discovered at that time that the central grave belonged to a man and below his body, they found a batch of animals’ burnt bones, known as elements of a graveside ceremony.
The tumulus is attracting visitors and has become part of the cultural and historic touristic destinations’ guides of Albanian and foreigner travel agencies and guides.
