TIRANA, February 3
The Albanian parliament is expected to ratify the €63.8 million loan agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) regarding the project on urban and tourism development in southern Albania.
This project consists of improving urban infrastructure and tourism assets as well as strengthening institutional capacities in order to support the development of local economies and tourism related activities in specific areas in southern Albania.
The implementation of the project will last for five years and it is going to be divided into four stages: urban development and infrastructure improvement, development and improvement of tourist destinations, development of markets and tourism related products and services and finally support for the implementation of the project.
The southern municipalities of Saranda, Gjirokastra, Berat and Permet are going to be primary beneficiaries.
The Albanian government has selected the coastal region Vlora and Saranda areas, and back country areas in Berat, Gjirokastra and Permet areas. The latter is considered a primary region with high potential in terms of cultural and natural heritage, which can help to develop tourism, local and national economy. Besides the southern Riviera, these municipalities receive the highest number of annual visitors because of the UNESCO World heritage Sites of Butrint, Gjirokastra and Berat.
