TIRANA, October 14
Head of state Bujar Nishani on Friday refused to decree the government’s law that allows import of waste in Albania, arguing that it is against the Albanian constitution and international conventions.
President Nishani highlighted the fact that over 65,000 signatures were collected three years ago on the referendum against waste import. A referendum that didn’t take place because of the government’s moratorium on the import of any type of waste.
Moreover, the President says that the current law failed to respect international conventions regarding the implementation of the self-sufficiency principle.
According to Nishani, the processing of the country’s waste should be the main priority.
