While thereβs much to be done for improving road safety in Albania, recent data show a significant drop in road accidents in October. Nerveless, the number of fatalities increased compared to October 2018.
The Albanian Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) unveiled on Thursday the report on October road accidents. INSTAT reported a nearly 20 percent decrease in road accidents during October as compared to the same period in 2018. Based on the stats, in 2018 there were 149 road accidents as compared to 118 this year in October.
More fatalities, fewer injured
The number of road fatalities in Oct 2019 was 25, nine more than in October 2018. Meanwhile, the number of injured was 118, 59 fewer than in October 2018.
In the meantime, the number of road fatalities during Jan-Oct 2019 was 182, 14 more than the same period in 2018.
Drivers, the main cause of road accidents
Driver distraction remains the main cause of road fatalities. Even though the report does not specify if the fatalities were pedestrians, cyclists, or non-pedestrians, drivers were responsible for 83.1 percent of road accidents and 20 fatalities in October.
Young adults responsible for most road accidents
According to the report, over 30 percent of road accidents occurred among young adults ages 25 β 34.
