TIRANA, September 9
The ecosystem of Kune-Vain Lagoon in Lezha area is expected to be recuperated thanks to a project coo-financed by the Global Environment Fund GEF), the United Nation and Environment Program (UNEP) and the Ministry of Environment. The project with a value of two million dollars will also benefit the economy of the local community. Minister of Environment Lefter Koka said that this project is a novelty for Albania in terms of concrete measures on adaption to climate changes.
Various factors such as the activity of the polder pump station and the deviation of Drin River caused damage to the ecosystem of the lagoon. The implementation of the project will need a period of three years to be completed. The first stage of investments is expected to start in early 2017. It will include the rehabilitation of ten wells that are going to supply clean water to the lagoon. The afforestation of ten hectares of degraded forests in the outskirts of the wetland area is another important part of the project. Moreover, the first stage includes the construction of a new waterway and two wave-stopping panels. Plants and vegetation that is resistant to the climate of the area will be planted in an area that spreads over 2,000 meters of coastal dunes.
