Following the latest developments on country’s south where hundreds of hectares are covered in waters due to massive flooding, Minister of Agriculture has sent an official letter to the Bank of Albania and second tie banks, requesting the adjournment of loan interests for damaged farmers in southern Albania. More than dozens of locals have been evacuated from their homes in Novosele, Vlore and Sarande, and many livestock died from flooding.
Minister of Agriculture Edmond Panariti requested the adjournment of loans for a period of 1-2 years for all farmers since according to him, a high number of farmers have taken loans for the expansion of their businesses or farms. In his letter, the Minister addresses the emergency situation, appealing for help to farmers.
“As we all have been aware of the latest developments, throughout Albania heavy rains and flooding have been registered, mainly in country’s south. This has caused heavy damages in locals’ agricultural activities. According to official data, there is a high number of farmers that have taken loans for their businesses or farms located in the flooded areas, and now they are facing huge loses which will be hard to recover and may have a negative impact in the agricultural production this year. In these conditions, under the competences of the head of Ministry of Agriculture, I ask for your help in facing with success this grave situation, caused by natural conditions… I request the adjustment of loans taken by farmers and businesses of flooded areas and the review of loan conditions for them, for a period of one in two years from now. By expressing my personal gratitude toward you, please take in consideration this request, hoping for your support to these families in facing this hard situation,” cites the letter of Minister Edmond Panariti send to banks in Albania.
