TIRANA, May 22
In December 2000 The General Ensemble of The United Nations claimed May 22 as the International Day for Biological Diversity, in honor of the approval of the Convent of Biodiversity on May 22, 1992 from the Final Act of Nairobi Conference. This year the official theme is ‘Our biodiversity, our food, our health’.
The theme stresses the diversity offered form our natural systems for the existence of humanity and wellbeing on Earth, while it contributes to other goals of sustainable development, including the adaptation to climate changes, rehabilitating the eco-systems, clearer water, and zero starvation, among others.
The systems of the production of food at the local level are on a threat. With this overexploitation and decrease, agro-biodiversity is disappearing and also the essential knowledge of traditional medicine and local food are becoming poor in content. The loss of different food regimes is connected directly to diseases such as: diabetes, obesity, and malnutrition, and has an immediate effect on the availability of traditional medicine.
