In his first declaration after being selected as Kosovo Prime Minister, Isa Mustafa spoke during the presentation of his government’s program, for the construction of a railway system to connect Kosovo with Albania. The statement came few days after the plan was presented to the Albanian Minister of Infrastructure Edmond Haxhinasto during his official visit to Kosovo, by his Kosovar counterpart Lufti Zharku. “The construction of a new railway that connects the two countries is in government’s list of priorities during this mandate”, declared PM Mustafa in his first public appearance after becoming Kosovo’s Prime Minister.
In turn, Albanian Minister of Infrastructure declared that “Albania-Kosovo” railway will have European standards and provides a great opportunity for region’s countries. “We will immediately start a prefeasibility study to see the implementation possibilities of this project as soon as possible, but we will also make a review of the regional market, since we are all part of it. This railway system will provide a future for the entire region,” stated Haxhinasto.
Albania’s and Kosovo’s governments will meet on March of this year in Tirana, one year after the first historic meeting between the two countries’ governments. During the meeting, the two Ministers of Infrastructure will sign the agreement on the start of a prefeasibility study for this project.
Albania-Kosovo railway will pass through 108 km in the Albanian territory and 17 km of Kosovo’s territory and for the implementation of this project, the two governments will apply for funds at the Investing Framework for Western Balkans. The construction of this project will ease transport for passengers and merchandise, not only between Albania and Kosovo but also among regional countries.
