TIRANA, December 15
A financing and project agreement was signed on Thursday between the Albanian Ministry of Finances and German Bank KfW. The bank will finance about Euro 20 million for a project that aims at resolving the concerning situation of waste in Vlora area.
“The project includes a loan of Euro 12 million for financing the investment, and two grants of Euro 7.5 and Euro 1.3 million respectively,” Minister of Finance Arben Ahmetaj said.
The project foresees the construction of a modern system of solid waste management, which according to deputy German Ambassador to Tirana Anke Holstein is going to improve the environment and boost tourism in the area.
She highlighted the need for investments while explaining that Vlora’s landfill will provide a modern management of solid waste as well as the construction of a sanitary landfill.
Meanwhile, minister Ahmetaj said that the project includes the shutting down of existing landfills in Vlora and Selenica.
On his part, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Sokol Dervishaj said that the project will provide a final solution to waste management issues, which has always been a major concern.
The new landfill will be constructed in Sherrishte area, and it will have a capacity of 350,000 tons.
