The entry into force of law on tobacco is being reflected in the decrease of import of cigarettes, based on the official data released by Albanian Customs. During the last eight months of this year, 13.5% less cigarettes were imported, compared to the same period of a year before, according to figures released by General Directory of Customs.
On January-August period were imported 1779 tons of cigarettes since on January 2014, entered into force the law for the increase of excise duty of cigarettes with 20 ALL/ Â pack of cigarettes. Before the adoption of law, the importing companies increased imports during Decemper 2013 by 174%, compared to December 2012 imports.
The latest changes in the excise duty of cigarettes will affect in the increase of price, considering that the increase of excise by 20 ALL will continue until 2017. Besides the adoption of this law, the government has undertaken other measures for the prevention of smoking in public places.
The increase of taxes for the so-called “luxury goods” comes as fulfillment of the IMF requests and as an application of EU directive that recommends the lowest level of excise on cigarettes to be 57% of the retail price.
