Tourists in Gjirokastra city are being welcomed by the locals in a very helpful manner. Young adults who speak English or other foreign languages are offering free of charge tours inside the city for people who visit Gjirokastra. The ancient stone city which is often called as “a live museum” gets thousands of visitors throughout the year.
The city is part of the world cultural heritage list of UNESCO and curious tourists want to see all the beauty of it during their visit. Most of the tourists visit the city during the summer season, as their primary tourism destination might be the Albanian Riviera or northern national parks of Valbona and Theth. Gjirokastra and Berat cities are always included in touristic packages, say Albanian tourism agencies.
But the increase of the number of tourists during this summer season has increased the necessity for more tour guides, which help tourists explore the city. Most of these tourists pass by in Gjirokastra even if the city was not included in their travel package. In this way, the best solution locals can give to not oriented tourists is to guide them for free. Young adults who can speak English and know very well the history, the culture and the touristic spots of the city are now free tour guides for tourists that visit their city.
