The head of the DP Lulzim Basha, held a meeting with the representatives of the IMF in Albania, Nadeem Ilahi and Jens Reinke, about the increase of the energy price. According to Basha, the reform in the energy sector is a failure that harms people in need, instead of giving them the possibility to pay their debts. This is only a coercive measure which is being applied by cutting the electricity to those who cannot pay it.
Another point of discussion was the lack of transparency regarding the electricity pricing, as Basha declared. “The government has not made public the new electricity price since several state institutions have requested the increase of the price.”
As for the new fiscal package and Budget 2015, Basha was of the opinion that the government has increased government expenditures and reduced the public investments as well as social assistance funds. The increase of taxes is unacceptable, he added, since the last years’ increase of taxes had negative effects in the country’s economy. Basha declared that the increase of some taxes will deepen the recession and will have dramatic consequences to the economy.
