Tirane, Albania / February 29, 2016
On February 29th, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean organization held in Tirana a seminar on the implementation of Port State Measures Agreement between FAO’s member countries. According to this agreement, all countries that have signed it should take certain measures to fight the illegal fishing. Its main aim is to prevent, detect and eliminate the illegal fishing in the waters of countries that have signed it.
Present in the seminar, the Albanian Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Water Management, Edmond Panariti, said the illegal fishing is a serious threatening to the fishing sector. According to him, “Albania is decided to sign this agreement in order to fight the illegal fishing, a phenomenon that threatens the preservation of water assets.” Albania is not yet part of the agreement but according to the Minister, Albania will soon sign it.
The Port State Measures Agreement has been already signed by the United States of America, the European Union countries and 20 other countries. Such agreement provides many advantages for the states which have signed it, such as the long-term maintenance of maritime sources and ecosystems, the prevention of the illegal fishing, increases the fishing sector’s formality level and increases the state’s control on the fishing fleet.
