TIRANA, December 5
The Ministry of Agriculture sees a positive trend in the egg industry as exports to the region and the European Union countries increased. Based on the official data provided by the ministry, over 1,115 metric tons of eggs have been exported during January-September 2016. Meanwhile, 962 metric tons of eggs were exported for the same period in 2015. The export income from this sector for 2016 is Lek 107 million .
Egg export ranks second in the sector of agriculture following the export of molluscs. According to experts, there is an increased trend of egg consumption in EU countries, as people try to cut read meat from their diets.
Based on official data, poultry farms in Albania produce 900 million eggs per year. Production doubled compared to ten years ago.
Although production increased, the egg price didn’t change during the entire year. One commercial egg is sold for Lek 14, while the price for a village egg varies form Lek 25-30.
