The export of medicinal plants has increased tremendously in latest years, especially during the year we left and the main market remains USA and some countries of the European Union.
According to figures published by the Ministry of Agriculture, during January-December 2014 period, the export of aromatic medicinal plants reached 11.600 tons, from 11.200 tons in 2013. In monetary terms, exports reached the amount of 3.5 billion ALL during 2014, 2 billion more than in 2013.
The export of medicinal plants has shown positive performance since the beginning of this type of business in Albania, after the fall of communism in 1990. In the first years, were American and international companies which came to Albania and started borrowing lands in alpine areas for purposes of use in gathering natural medicinal plants, but in last years even Albanian citizens have opened their businesses in this sector and have started to export plants.
The main importers are the USA and European Union countries while in Albania the major part of these businesses are focused in country’s north, mostly in Shkodra region were thousands of locals are employed in these businesses for gathering and processing medicinal plants. This export activity has shown in years a positive trend and has played an important role in country’s economy.
