Agriculture sector in Albania is seen as a priority by the government and the EU as well, as the most important and reliable source of incomes for citizens living in rural areas, but also a top contributor in the economic growth.
EU will give a fund of 92 ml EUR for food safety starting from this year until 2020, in the framework of IPA projects. The news was announced during a ceremony held on December 18 on the occasion of IPA 2009 project finalization, at the headquarters of Regional Directory of National Food Authority, in Tirana.
“The consolidation of food safety in Albania” project opens a new chapter of the food security in Albania. During the ceremony, the EU ambassador to Albania, Romana Vlahutin declared that “the European Commission is engaged in assisting to the successful implementation of national strategy for agriculture sector and rural development. The fund of 92 ml EUR is the biggest amount allocated so far and is aimed at supporting Albania in the effective development of the food sector, since it offers employment for locals in rural areas.”
The fund will go to projects that aim to improve food safety in Albania. The European Union urges Albania to give special funds for the maintenance of investments and laboratory equipment, since food safety is a main condition for country’s integration to the EU.
