TIRANA, September 28
Farmers in Dumrea area, central Albania, are interested in tobacco cultivation, which is considered one of the main income generating activities for this area. The hilly terrain of Dumrea plateau, as well as the soil quality, make the area suitable for tobacco growing. So far in 2017, tobacco farmers have planted over 50 hectares. This is more compared to the previous year, but the area has the potential for higher production.
In the meantime, experts say that tobacco production has increased based on the data provided by the domestic market.
Based on statistics from the General Directorate of Customs, the total market consumption during the first five months of 2017 increased by 60 tons more compared to the same period of 2016.
Yet, specialists say that despite the high countryโs potential for tobacco cultivation, the domestic market is dominated by imported tobacco.
