Deputy Interior Minister Rovena Voda explained in an interview for ATA that the novelties to the law are related to the two fundamental principles on citizenship respectively the right of blood (jus sanguinis), the right of the soil (jus soli). Moreover, another novelty is related to citizenship removal due to relations or participation in terrorist organizations.
Voda stated that the new changes recognize the right to become a citizen by origin for all those who can prove family relations that go as far as three generations back. She said that this change was made based on origin and not ethnicity.
Further on, the new concept on the right of the soil that will apply to children found in Albania without parents or with citizenship other than Albanian. The Deputy Minister said that every child born to Albanian parents, no matter where they live, can acquire Albanian citizenship and this right will be granted even when theyβre over the age of 18.
In the cases of foreign citizens married to Albanians, they can obtain the Albanian passport if they prove residency to Albania for more than one year.
Voda said that citizenship will be granted to foreign investors after they meet specific standards and requirements.
