In the first quarter of 2015, railways transport of merchandises increased with 20.9% compared to the same period of the previous year, at a volume of 7.314 tons per kilometer. Compared to the last quarter of 2014, the transport of merchandises using the railways system decreased by 46.5%, says a report issued by the Institute of Statistics.
The number of passengers per kilometer which used the railways to travel during the first quarter of 2015 was estimated to be 1.307 passengers / km, while it decreased by 2.9% compared to the first quarter of 2014.
In ports, the volume of loading and unloading of merchandises reached the amount of 914.000 tons and compared to the first quarter of 2014, it increased by 9.1%. The volume of loading and unloading of merchandises decreased by 2.8% compared to the last quarter of 2014.
The railways system is not very used by travelers in Albania but it is still a manner for transporting merchandises. The government has vowed to revival the railways system in order to transform it into a safe and beneficial transport manner for citizens and businesses.
