TIRANA, August 5
We like good tourism news but can’t ignore this. Following the death of a Russian tourist in Livadh beach, Himara area, after he was seriously injured by a speedboat while swimming, the border police started an operation on Friday morning in the entire coastal area and beaches. It aims at identifying and seizing all the speed boats, power boats and jet skis that don’t have required documents or ignore the safety exclusion zone thus posing a deadly threat to swimmers. Only during Friday morning, six Jet Ski and one inflatable boat were seized.
On its part, the State Police calls on local power institutions to take immediate measures that provide safety to beachgoers and swimmers. Director of the Border Police Genc Merepeza said that local power doesn’t cooperate regarding this issue and they also neglect communication with police forces.
“No safe areas for water access of leisure boats have been defined. Official requests have been sent to the municipalities of Himara, Vlora, Saranda, Pogradec, Durres and Shkodra, but there was no feedback,” Merepeza said.
