TIRANA, June 7
Albania will prepare the legal framework for the climate protection program by 2018. Representatives from the Ministry of Environment say that the legal package will fill the gap in climate policy and also ensure air quality conforming to the Paris Agreement. The specialists confirmed for Scan TV that besides the reduction of greenhouse gasses and climate protection, the new legal framework will also focus on environment preservation.
Albania ratified the Paris Agreement on June 2016. The new law clearly defines the institutional tasks for the implementation of international commitments as well as measures that will be taken on a national level.
According to the law, all projects that will be developed in the sector of agriculture, water, and farming must take into consideration all the expected climate changes. Meanwhile, responsible institutions must take the necessary measures in order to include climate change mitigation measures in their policies.
Currently, there are five main criteria that must be fulfilled based on the Paris Agreement. At first, there is the long-term goal of keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. Secondly, there is the need to cut greenhouse gas emission or to reduce them to zero. Third, coal, gas, oil and should be replaced by renewable sources of energy.
