Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a commemoration ceremony to honor the victims of Holocaust in the framework of International Day of Holocaust Commemoration.
The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ditmir Bushati, United Nations Permanent Coordinator for Albania Zineb Touimi-Benjelloun, the Israeli ambassador to Albania, David Cohen, Ministers, representatives of Diplomatic sphere in Albania, MPs, representatives of religious communities and members of families which survived from Holocaust massacre.
Bushati held a speech during the ceremony and emphasized Albania’s welcoming and the protection of Jewish at a time when other governments handed over Jewish people to Holocaust organizers. This excellent example of tolerance and humanity was also praised by the UN Permanent Coordinator and Israeli’s ambassador to Albania.
The honoring ceremony took place at the National Museum which exposed a photo exhibition called *“Besa” which showcased old photos of Albanian people helping Jewish during the Second World War.
(In Albanian the word besa means giving someone your word of honor and accomplish it. Besa is a very important feature of Albania’s tradition and a value which still exists among Albanians.)
