Prime Minister of Croatia Zoran Milanovic, held a meeting with homologues from Albania, Bosnja Herzegovina and Montenegro in Croatia, on the eve of the Conference of the Western Balkans to be held on Thursday in Berlin.
The topic of the discussion was the realization and the finalization of regional projects as well as the construction of Adriatic-Ionian highway, which is supposed to connect all the region of Balkans with the European Union territorial area. This highway is considered by experts as the shortest road to connect the West Europe with the south part of the continent.
The highway will start from the Italian city of Trieste and is predicted to end at the Greek city of Kalamatas. With a length of 1,500 km, of which 350 will be in the Albanian territory, 450 km in the Greek territory, 95 km in Montenegro, 80 km in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 530 km in Croatia and 55 km in Slovenia, the Adriatic-Ionian highway is estimated as one of the most important investments for this region.
The conference of the Western Balkans will have the focus of the meeting this important project which will be funded by German government, since the Prime Ministers will be attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Along this highway will be builded 42 tunnels and 92 bridges. The total value of this investment is not known yet but experts say this highway will be very costly, but in the other hand, it will affect in the economic empowerment of the entire region.
