According to a statement of the Albanian Energy Regulator, private entities have increased their interest in investing in electricity hydropower plants during the past year. 64 subjects from the private sector have applied for various activities in the electrical energy sector at the Energy Regulator.
The Board of Commissioners of the Energy Regulator approved only 42 applications for license and 22 others are in process of evaluation, according to the statement.
Statistics of the Energy Regulator show that during the past year the total electrical energy production by local hydropower plants reached 19.4% of the total net production. Currently in Albania there are 98 private electrical energy hydropower systems, 93 of which have sale contracts with the Albanian Power Cooperation. 5 other domestic electrical energy producers produce energy for their necessities or for trade with other countries, divided from the public production.
The amount of the electrical energy produced by small and medium sized hydropower plants has increased continually since 2008.
