Russia has announced the ban of Albanian imports on fruits and vegetables after claiming that these products were being re-exported by the EU countries. Russian authorities have announced this temporarily measure will take place on December 8 but the decision is not political.
Julia Trofimova, spokesperson for Russia’s agricultural watchdog told RIA Novosti that the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision will impose restrictions of agriculture deliveries from Albania to Russia starting from December 8. She stated that the Albanian officials provided 21 phytosanitary certificates to Rosselkhoznadzor, all but one of which was found to be forged. “We therefore concluded that Albania is a cover for the import of banned products from the European Union into Russia,” said Trofimova.
The same restrictions regarding agricultural products were imposed to Ukraine and Moldova during October. Russian authorities have claimed that imports from these countries are indeed alleged re-exports by the EU countries.
Russia also has banned the import of meat products from Montenegro, by giving the same argument. But even the European Union has imposed coercive sanctions to Russia in many sectors, mainly in the banking and energy systems. This was followed by the immediate response of Russia which banned for an one year term the imports of food products as well as fruits and vegetables from the EU countries.
