TIRANA, December 4
New European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said during the press read-out of the first College meeting on Wednesday that the EU will allocate Euro 15 million from the European Neighborhood Fund immediately to support the Albanian people after the recent disastrous earthquake. President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted that the EU stands in full solidarity with Albania with actions not only with words, with support already on the ground.
“We are committed to providing more. So far the Commission has helped to mobilize three research and rescue teams of more than 200 staff from Italy Greece, and Romania. We have dispatched tents, beds, blankets, sleeping bags, generators, and hygiene items for emergency needs by Belgium, Austria, Romania, and Slovakia,” the EC President stated.
Moreover, she added that Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic will head to Albania on Wednesday, mainly to provide assessments for the states of the buildings that are affected and of course to have a primary assessment on what kind of help is needed for reconstruction.
“We have decided in college that we’ll organize a donor’s conference,” President Ursula von der Leyen concluded.
