Starting from tomorrow, Albania’s southern borders will be controlled from European and Coast Guard Agency also known as Frontex. This makes Albania the first country in Europe outside the European Schengen Area, to collaborate with E.U. regarding its borders.
During the official ceremony, the European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, said today that just a few days before the European Elections, the need for a more united and stronger European family is more important than ever.
He added that a key priority is to have strong relations with close neighbors, this includes Albanians. He said that Albania is part of the European family and this a proof of commitment to bring E.U. and Albania together.
Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, listed some of the benefits of this agreement, firstly it paves the way to the collaboration regarding the information and the analysis of the flux of people passing through Albania from migrating countries.
Albania, according to him, is faced with a flux of migrators 6.7 times more in 2018 compared to 2017, and people who migrate are not seen as a risk or problem, because of Albanian tradition.
50 officers from Frontex will be deployed in the southern borders of Albania, monitoring the area between Albania and Greece, since the latter is the only E.U member country bordering with Albania.
