A list of products and goat breeds from the Albanian highlands are now registered as unique brands. According to the General Directorate of Patents and Trademarks, the list of products includes honey from Malesi e Madhe, Chestnut Honey from Tropoja, Chestnut Honey from Malesi e Madhe, Tropoja Blueberries, and Kuksi Blueberries.
The protection of industrial property enhances the value of trademarks, especially for Made in Albanian products certified with the geographic indication of origin.
The Directorate of Patents and Trademarks confirmed an increased number of applications for geographic indicators, mostly in Northern Albania regions. The certification and stocktaking of products is part of a project funded by a French grant on biodiversity.
In the meantime, Hasi Goats, Kuksi and Tropoja’s sage, chestnuts and blueberries are now registered as unique trademarks, therefore they will have a higher price in the domestic and export markets. The previous certification of Tropoja chestnut market a positive precedent. The price of Tropoja chestnuts marked a threefold increase during the recent years. The annual revenue generated from the product export is estimated Euro 3 million. In the meantime, the blueberries that grow in wild in the Albanian Alps are being exploited. Currently, there are no storage or processing facilities. The produce is sold fresh at a lower price compared to Montenegro’s blueberry market.
The list of unique Albanian products certified with a national patent includes Uje Glina (sparkling water), Borsh Y.Hajdini (olive oil) Parmigiano Reggiano, Saranda (olive oil), Jufka Dibrane (Albanian noddles), Hasi kid goat, Blueberry from Kuksi Highlands, Blueberry from Tropoja Highlands, Chestnut Honey from Malesi e Madhe, Chestnuts from Malesi e Madhe, Tropoja Chestnut, Chestnut Honey from Tropoja, Uje Korabi (still water).
