In its article “The competition for the Adriatic gas”, Corriere della Sera writes that Albania is one of the Balkan countries searching for oil and gas in the Adriatic and Ionian seas. But, Greece and Montenegro are making big efforts and have started an international competition for the search and the exploitation of gas in their territorial waters. According to this article, it is expected that Albania very soon will start searching in its long coastal line and the first oil wells will operate in 2018.
Even Croatia has started to search for oil and gas in the rich sea of Adriatic which seems very promising for Crude products for Mediterranian countries bordering it. On April 2nd Croatia started the search for gas for 29 production blocks that it is predicted to be exploitated in a period of 5 years. According to official declarations by Croatian government, this search operation will end on November 3rd.
The reason of this wide search operation in the waters of Adriatic sea is the economic crisis that has served as a catalyst for Italy’s neighbouring countries to search for new revenue sources. According to Corriere della Sera, it is impossible to assume the amoung of oil and gas reserves that may be on these Mediterranian seas.
