A conference on economy titled “The Economic Growth in Albania” held in Tirana on July 25th with the participation of Ricardo Hausmann, Director of of Harvard’s Center for International Development and Professor of the Practice of Economic Development at the Kennedy School of Government and the Albanian Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Entrepreneurship Arben Ahmetaj, economy experts and other participants.
During his speech, Minister Ahmetaj declared that there are 12 non functional industrial areas in the country and the implementation of a pilot project for the development of these areas represents a big challenge for the Albanian government.
He added that this pilot project will be implemented during the 300 upoming days of government and that these industrial areas will help the local businesses and for the creation of a producing industry for export purposes.
On the other hand, Mr. Hausmann emphasized the importance that the government should give the economic development in general terms and not to focus only in exports, because according to him, there are other sector that need to be supported, as the agriculture or manufacturing sectors. “Our objective has been the agriculture sector. The reliance only on exports is not the best procedure to follow. We have analysed all the opportunities that sectors such manufacturing, agriculture and turism represent and we should reconsider all the potential opportunities”, declared Director Hausmann.
He further added that Albania must evaluate all its potentials and resources since the country is heading toward European Union.
