The Albanian part of Ohrid Lake is expected to be part of UNESCO World Heritage in 2019. This was confirmed at the conclusion of the Sixth Transboundary Platform Meeting for the safeguarding of the Lake Ohrid Region that was held in the city of Pogradec on September 14-25. This sixth meeting was part of a joint European Union and UNESCO initiative, in close cooperation with the Albanian and Macedonian authorities, to strengthen transboundary cooperation for the management of the Lake Ohrid region’s natural and cultural heritage. Project officer Alexandra Fiebig said during a press conference at the end of the meeting that the inscribing of the Albanian part of the lake in UNESCO will strengthen the protection and integrity of this heritage. Moreover, Fiebig highlighted that the Nomination File should be submitted on February 2018. Afterward, UNESCO needs a year and a half to scrutinize the file and send monitoring groups in the area and by the end on 2019, it will decide if the Albanian part of Ohrid Lake will be inscribed in UNESCO or not. In the meantime, she also highlighted that this is a unique project for South East European region as it is the first initiative for joining two parts of a transboundary heritage.
On the other hand, the representative from the Ministry of Culture, Sonila Kora said that the project is in the final steps. The Albanian side is completing the file on the nomination of the Albanian part of Ohrid Lake in UNESCO.
