Butrint Mosaics to Be Covered Up on September 15

TIRANA, September 4

The tourists that have planned to visit the ancient ruins of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, until September 15th, will also have the chance to see the beautiful mosaics at the Roman Baptistery and at the Roman Bath. The mosaic will remain on display until mid-September. This was announced by Prime Minister Edi Rama on Monday.
According to the official UNESCO description about Butrint, the baptistery is the most important ruin from the Paleo-Christian era and its floor has a beautiful mosaic decoration.
The archeological park is one of the most visited attractions in the country. Numerous daily visitors arrive from the Island of Corfu and from cruise ships that have added Saranda as their port of call during this season.
The Baptistery was built during the second quarter of the sixth century AD. It was discovered in 1928 by the Italian Archeological Mission.
The mosaics will be reburied sand after September 15 in order to avoid environmental factors.
