TIRANA, November 1
Shkodra Lake, which is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, along with Buna River, both Ramsar sites, share one of the richest ecosystems of fresh and brackish water between Albania and Montenegro.
The surrounding karst mountains, the rocky shore, wetlands, small fishing villages, and the natural beauty make the lake a perfect destination for tourists in search of nature getaways. On the other hand, the lake is home to over 250 bird species. Half of them are migratory birds, while the other part builds their nests along the lake shore. Based on official data, the lake is a sanctuary for 1.5 to 2.5 million birds. A substantial number of threatened species depend on this ecosystem.
Over 70 percent of Albaniaโs bird population is found in Shkodra Lake area. Their number increases during autumn, which is the perfect time for birdwatchers to enjoy the water birds spectacle. A breeding colony of the Dalmatian Pelican lives in this lake. Wetland species that live in the area include owls, ducks, geese, gulls, birds of prey, waders, and passerines.
Shkodra Lake and Buna River contain important ecosystems as well as nature and man-made habitats. Natural and cultural tourism are developing in the lake shore. Shiroka, Zogaj, Bregu i Ranes, Bishtiqendia, Shegan, Grili, and Sterbeqi are considered as areas with rare values.
The absence of industrial plants is considered a positive factor in terms of environmental protection. However, the level of public awareness on environmental issues remains a problem. On the other hand, the discharge of waste water and plastic litter transported by rivers remain major sources of pollution that need to be addressed.
