The protection of intellectual property and trademark is a key element of an innovative economic system based on knowledge, attraction of foreign investments, honest competition and consumer protection. President of the European Patent Office (EPO) Benoit Battistelli declared this on Thursday, during an official visit to Tirana.
Thus, the small and medium-sized businesses in Albania can now register their trademark at a European level for only 20 percent of the cost. Battistelli held a meeting with Minister of Economic Development Milva Ekonomi and they agreed on the facilitations that Albanian businesses can benefit.
He said that both parts have proposed the signing of a joint agreement, which will encourage the Albanian enterprises to become part of what is considered ‘a trademark guarantee’. Therefore, they will pay only 20 percent of the total cost.
“We will get total support for the Albanian businesses in order that they benefit from the facilitation that the European Office of Patents Provides,” Minister Ekonomi said.
The regulation of patents and trademarks is considered as an important tool that helps to attract more foreign investments to Albania. Hence, it is important to increase awareness among businesses and universities concerning the importance of legal protection of their products and inventions.
