A Euro 619,000 rehabilitation and landscaping project is under way on Apollonia Park, southwestern Albania. Minister of Culture Mirela Kumbaro and Head of the European Union Delegation to Albanian Romana Vlahutin inspected the archaeological site and the progress of works, which will focus on the conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of the Monastery of St. Mary and landscaping.
Minister Kumbaro highlighted that some of the best experts of restoration are conducting the works. The intervention will cover the monuments within the monastery space, including the statuary portico, refectory building, church, archaeological repository, museum, and the landscaping of the Park area.
On her part Ambassador Vlahutin praised the importance of cultural heritage. She said that the locals should benefits from this cultural and historical asset
The monastery of St. Mary has been included in the list of consolidated projects following the Ljubljana Process β Funding Heritage Rehabilitation in South-East Europe. This is a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and European Commission to support the restoration of the historical heritage as a generator of social and economic capital, bringing tangible benefits to local populations by encouraging cultural tourism.
