The scanning of containers will become a reality in six new cross border points in 2016, according to the General Director of Customs, Pranvera Fagu.
Fagu declared that this move will have a positive impact in ensuring that only safe goods will enter and leave the Albanian territory and will decrease the fiscal evasion.
Currently, such service is being applied in four cross bordering points by the Albanian American consortium S2 Albania, which started operations on September 2015. Merchants and exporting companies opposed such policy by arguing that the tariff they had to pay was high and unreasonable. After many discussions, the government decided to reduce the tariff to EUR 22 for any Customs declaration of more than EUR 1000.
Businesses have to pay the tariff of the physical scanning control based on the customs declarations they provide. Currently, the number of customs declarations of more than EUR 1000 is 400,000 and the number is expected to increase by 6% in the upcoming year, says the General Directorate of Customs.
