INSTAT statistics show that the amount of medicinal plants exported to international markets has increased and dominates “Made in Albania” exports. “Medicinal plants, fruits and vegetables” group of products comprise more than 94% of Albanian exports and 45% of the total amount of exports in fields of agriculture, livestock and agro industry.
80% of Albanian medicinal plants get exported to the United States of America while only 20% of them get exported in markets of France and Germany. According to experts, there is a high demand for such products in the international markets since they are of a high quality.
Most of these medicinal plants are grown and gathered in northern areas of the country, mainly in Shkodra county (Malesi e Madhe). The gathering and sale of sage and lavender are the main source of revenues for the mayor part of Malesi e Madhe residents. The trade of medicinal plants is a crucial source of revenues for inhabitants of remote rural areas in north of the country.
Statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture show that exports in the agro industry sector increased by 12% during the first semiannual of this year. The most exported product during this period was the conserved fish whose exports increased by 32% and in general comprises 50% of the total of Made in Albania exports.
